Cup Challenge

March2

UWow!! Tuesday the 18th of January was a fun day,  all of the year 6s came together and did teamwork activities. The day was called ‘

The Year 6 Conference – Lead Yourself into the future’.

I was in the Yellow group, we did lots of fun activities so it is hard to chose one to talk about,

My favourite activity was probably the cup tower challenge, we came up with great ideas but the tower would always fall down. The equipment we had was plastic cups, rubber bands, string and scissors. We couldn’t touch the cup with our hands only the equipment could. With 5 or something minutes left we came up with an idea which included using our Leadership journals to make the tower stable. We needed to write in our leadership journals to reflect but people’s books were being used for the tower. When we pulled the book out, guess what happened….

the tower fell. The yellow team did a great job with the teamwork.

I learn’t that when I am working in a team I can come up with great ideas that bounce from other peoples ideas, when I work in a group I feel more confident in myself because I am doing it with others that can explain things that I don’t understand about the activity. I learn’t that I can do thing if i put my mind and achieve something. During the activity I felt good because I came up with some good ideas and the team elaborated together.

It was a very fun day and full of anticipation.

My favourite book chat book of the year

December3

My favourite book chat book of  the year is:

Don’t follow Vee by Oliver Phommavanh.

The genre is Family and Friendship as well as Humour. The story is focused around a character called Vee and her social media obsessed mother who can’t stop taking and posting photos of Vee to instagram. I really enjoyed the book because it followed Vee in her journey of attempting and failing to stop her mum taking

and posting photos of Vee’s life. Vee also attempts and sometimes fails to get her mum out and about and not being on her phone. Vee also has a bestie that helps Vee through the tough and good times.

Do you have a mum who is obsessed Who is addicted to their phones?

Adaptations of Animals

November28

Believe it or not…. This animal is very cute but VERY lazy.

A greyish fur to camouflaged into trees you can barely see it, it’s so lazy. By the way this animal is not a bear.

A Koala

Name and classification of Animal:

The name of the animal I am researching is a Koala. Koalas are Marsupials (they are when a animal is found in Australia, New Guinea and also in America). Their scientific name is Phascolarctos cinereus, I think it is very hard to pronounce. They have small eyes, greyish fur, shaggy ears, rough pads for gripping gum trees and a big black nose.

Physical appearance:

This is sort of connected to classification.

Greyish fur to camouflage to trees, Pouch to raise its young, Shaggy ears, No tail so it doesn’t get in the way when resting on trees and branches, Koalas have 2 thumbs on its front paws that help them grip on the branches, The sharp parts on their claws dig into the branches and tree trunks to help them climb and move across branches.

Diet:

Koalas eat Eucalyptus leaves even though there are only 700 species of Eucalyptus leaves in Australia, Koalas will eat up to 50 leaves. Eucalyptus leaves have a high level of moisture, fibre and high in nutrients.

Environment:

Koalas are endangered by loss of suitable habitat. Filled with Gumtrees and gum leaves. They are also very exposed to bushfires, which is very sad.

Structural, behavioural and Physiological Adaptations

Structural, behavioural and psychological adaptations have to connect at some stage. I have been told to put them into headings though.

Structural Adaptations

When attracting a mate the male has a scent that is very strong, he also makes a loud grunting noise. They have thickish/waterproof fur to keep them warm but not to warm and dry.

Behavioural Adaptations

Koalas live in a community where another dies one doesn’t take over. It takes a year for the scent to fade and then another group can move into the area.

Koalas climb tall trees to get food, shelter and avoid predators from the ground.

Physiological Adaptations

Rough pads on the palms and soles of the paws helping to grip tree branches and tree trunks.

Fun facts:

  • Koalas sleep up to 20 hours a day
  • A koalas size is 60-85cm long
  • Joes live in their mothers pouch and at the rear end they have a gap and when they relax the joey can get out but when they tense up the muscle the gap closes and the Joey can not get out.

I hope you learnt something new. What did you not know?.

Christmas poem

November19

Christmas is nearly here,

the year has gone so quickly

having fun with family, laughing to jokes and seeing people enjoy them selves,

a level of happiness is high,

people mucking around in the pool trying to cool off,

filled with food,

waiting to be allowed to play with our new things.

chatter filling my ears.

Outside on the grass, bouncing on the trampoline and playing basketball.

The day is nearly over, we should be happy while it lasts,

need to wait 57 weeks and it will happen all over again.

Time to go to sleep it has been a good day,

when we wake up we can play with our new things  (instead of being on screens).

Christmas is great

Christmas

November19

Hello,

For week 7 blogging challenge we had to write about the celebrations or festivals we celebrate.

I celebrate Christmas, it is on the 25th of December every year and when you wake up under the tree which is  decorated, on the 24th of December night someone puts presents under the tree and when you wake up you open them with your family. Normally in Australia  Christmas day is hot. Christmas is about giving and spending time with your family.

Some desserts people have are Pavlova which is crispy Meringue, cream and then fruits on the top, I have that, because my Grandma makes the best Pavlova.

This is what I do on Christmas day:

in the morning, I can’t help but go down and look at the presents and then of course my Mum wakes up and she comes and looks with me, I also peek at all the stockings, I see what shape, size the presents are under the tree. In the morning we also take our dog Arlo for a walk after we open presents and the 2019 Christmas celebrate it with our family. We chill out by the pool, eat yummy snacks and meals, have chats, laugh, And my family is very musical so there is always some sort of performance but my sister and I aren’t very talented so we just watch. And of course Christmas it all about giving but every kid likes receiving gifts.

What celebrations do you celebrate?

Toonallook Reflection

November9

Toonallook Camp Reflection.

From the 28th of October till the 31st of October, my class and some extras went on a camp to Toonallook in Gippsland.

Toonallook was full with Anticipation, with it’s sunrises in the morning and it’s beaches with all the patterned rocks and the glistening blue water, the lazy koalas that sleep 24/7 and Raymond Island because that was where the bike riding was and I had friends near me to talk with and that made the time fly. The fishing was fun because we got to talk with friends while relaxing on the jetty witch was opposite from Raymond Island and the water underneath the jetty is called Lake Victoria.

At the main place I was in a cabin with Danica, Lol (Lorelei), Tilly and Taylor. On the first and last night I slept like a log.

The challenge/s that I had was sleeping out at expo, which is where we walk on a beach for a bit and then we go across a road and there we are. It’s like camping, I was in a tent with Jaime and Tori (That was on the 2nd day). The reason I thought it was a challenge was because every time I go camping I have been with my family. The other challenge was bike riding in such heat but my group ‘The Afterburners’ used resilience and pushed threw. (That was on the first day)

We and I used loads of the PLA’s ( positive Learner attributes) during the 4 days.

We have to use communication in everything that we say, we had to use it during the challenges with the 4 sticks making a glass and a rock inside and as a team we only were aloud to move 2 sticks to remake the form of the glass and that makes the rock out of the cup. We got that fast because we used communication.

We also used resilience in everything we had trouble with. Whether it’s making new friendships (for some people) to being exhausted and then missing home.

You also have to use collaboration by working together with your team to get things done and contribute to make your team the best it can be.

My most memorable moment/s was everything- but if I had to say the most memorable moments was the bike riding around Raymond Island because the setting was magnificent with all the trees and koalas, my group during the bike riding at Raymond Island we saw 31 koalas!.

Hanging around the camp playing King Ball and talking with all the outdoor ED staff Grace,Josh,Jesse and the fabulous cook that cooked amazing food, the 1 and only Trish. Being with Misty and Mr Nichol, and the great year 11 helpers, Coco and Jasmine was amazing.  The 2 girls actually hanged out with us. The last day Coco and Jasmine organised a Toona challenge which was a nice way to finish off our time at Toonallook. And I cannot finish this off with the shoe game not being mentioned.  It is a game where you split into 2 teams; in our case it was ‘The Afterburners’ and ‘Jazz’s Jellybeans. You put a drink bottle in the middle of 2 shoes and 2 cushions at each end 20 feet from the drink bootle and someone on the other team/side has the same number as you. And the adult calls out a number and they have to grab a shoe and their aloud to throw the other shoe out of the way but you can only have one shoe at a time then you have to SIT on the cushion and throw the shoe to hit the drink bootle over and the fist one to knock it over wins.

Thank you to all the outdoor Ed staff for making a fabulous camp come into place. Misty and Mr Nichol for being there for us and having the enthusiasm for how the days went.

Thank You

End of Gold Rush experience reflection

September3

This term for integrated studies we have been learning about the gold rush and the gold felids. We went to Sovereign Hill and spent 3 days and 2 nights to learn about what the gold rush and fields looked like.

I have learnt heaps.                                                                                             when we went to  to Sovereign hill we went to a school for 2 days in school behaving like children from the 1850s and seeing how people dress, how people work and the differences of how girls and boys work. We also learnt how to dig and pan for gold. We went and saw a sound and light show which showed and taught us the Eureka Hotel burning down. Which was because they the diggers were sick of the miners licenses and the murder of James Scobie and court to see in james Bentley the owner of the hotel should go to jail. The reason that their was licences was because the wonted people to go back home to their jobs because their was two many people on the diggings.

The Eureka stockade lasted for 20 minutes and it started on the 3 December 1854. More than 30 men died. They flag was put on a pole after the Eureka stockade by three women and they did it in silence.

The businesses were not a-lot in the 1850s everyone likes all the food shops though because they didn’t have much food when they were on the diggings 2because they have to pay for the licences. And i would hate to be a doctor because if you hurt one part of you body and you needed it to be fixed there was no a or numbing cream or anaesthetic so they just had to cut it off with a saw.

Famous people were James Bentley because he was the owner of the Eureka Hotel and the murder of James Scobie. Peter lalor was the person who did the speech of “Defend our Liberties” and writes for not having gold licences for digging.

Some important dates were James Scobie murder witch happened on the 7 October 1854. The eureka hotel burnt on the 12 October 1854. The Eureka Stockade was on the 3 December 1854.

My partner and I choose to build the Confectionery store because we thought it will be the best won to build and research. We had to ask them things like how they made the boiled lollies. And it was really satisfying seeing then mould the lollies.

I applied reading because we had to research about the gold rush and the life of people. And reading what I reflected on and that totally bought me back to my experience.

I used writing a-lot because we had to quickly write down what research i had found. What we were practicing in school.

I used mathematics a-lot because we did this project on direction and location because we were telling people how to get to the place I’m in Sovereign Hill and we used  shape to build the actual diorama that we made.

What P.L.A did my parter and i use

We used communication for our diorama to decide how we were going to build or confectionary store. And i used courage because I haven’t made a box diorama and I thought it was fun. We also used connectedness to decide who will work on what part to get it done.

We had some trouble with the neatness of the cutting of the box but we resolved it by neatening  up with popsicle sticks.

My highlights were probably learning about life on the gold fields and how all the cool events happened. But there is so many i cant name them all

I enjoyed the making of the dioramas because you got to use a glue gun which I have never used it before so that was really fun designing it. And of course going to sovereign Hill and looking at what it looks like in the 1850s

The only advice that we give is there’s a lot to learn and it’s a really good experience you progress on your knowledge for the gold rush which is really good and just have fun with it.

I didn’t really learn anything about myself or others I just learnt that people‘s knowledge are different and people remember different things.

This experience has been amazing gives you lots of opportunity to learn different things and experience life in the 1850s and how people adapt to things because we live friends food water given to us and they live with nothing that they know that’s coming to them. I really enjoyed the school experience because you can learn how people were treated differently in the schools and  the toys that they play with.

What have you learnt about the gold history?

The End

Hazel
